Folded cloths immersed in water and then applied to the skin-are a good way the gain some of the benefits of water.Extreme temperatures, either very hot or very cold water,are not recommended on the skin, especially the face.

Water Temperatures

Cool water tightens, slows down the glandular activity, decreases circulation and cams inflammation. Warm water relaxes the tissues, encourages glandular activity, and increases circulation.

Normal skin Use cool or warm compresses.
Oily skin Use cool to tepid compresses.
Dry skin Use warm compresses.
Combination skin Use warm compresses.
Sensitive skin Use tepid or warm compresses.
Blemished skin Use cool to tepid compresses.
Mature skin Use warm compresses.

Herbal infusions can be added to the basin water for compresses to nourish and condition the skin as well as help alleviate skin problems. Choose a blend appropriate for your skin type. After you have thoroughly mixed the dried herbs, make a strong tea using two tablespoons of herbs to one cup of boiling water. Cover and allow to steep for thirty minutes. Strain, then pour the tea into the basin and add warm or cool water, whichever is appropriate for your skin type, and apply the compress usual.

Essential oils can be used with facial compresses to create a wonderful treatment that provides the benefits of both hydrotherapy and aromatherapy.
